Inernet Addiction Special Event

As many of you may have experienced, the term “internet addiction” has become a growing and serious problem for our next generation. Not only are our children compulsively spending too much time playing computer games, they are also being exposed to questionable content and people.

I gave a commitment to all of you earlier this year that I would find a professional to dedicate research in this area of growing concern. I can now happily announce that we have found a very experienced professional who will be specializing in this field.

David Dahl, Ph.D. is a clinical neuropsychologist who has done family counseling for addictive disorders both in an inpatient and outpatient settings. Additionally, he is an ordained minister, whom, for the past twenty-five years, has served in congregations both in British Columbia and the Bay Area. He holds adjunct faculty positions, teaching ethics, marriage counseling, and neuropsychology in a local graduate psychology programs in addition to conducting educational, disability, and forensic evaluations. Recently, families have looked to his help in diagnosing and providing therapy for cases of compulsive internet use and computer game addictions, some of which have received educational evaluations and treatment for this recently appearing addictive syndrome.

Dr. Dahl will help the Inner Growth Center to give a special three session seminar regarding “Internet Addiction,” starting in January. Parents will be required to commit to all three sessions. In the first session, Dr. Dahl will listen to individuals for addictive syndromes at home and give parents methods to assess the degree to which their children may be compelled to use the internet to manage mood and social problems; in the second session, he will recommend interventions for this syndrome, and in the last session, parents will meet to report the outcomes of his recommendations. All the discussion results will be compiled in a research project by Dr. Dahl. Strict confidentiality will be maintained. Participants will come to understand better how to care for their children's social and emotional development in the use of powerful and persuasive tools of information technology.

This is a wonderful opportunity for parents. Please register as soon as possible if you are interested.
